Actors: Terence Davies

Director: Terence Davies

IMDB Rate: 7.3 out of 10 (658 votes)

Plot Summary:Terence Davies (1945- ), filmmaker and writer, takes us, sometimes obliquely, to his childhood and youth in Liverpool. Hes born Catholic and poor later he rejects religion. He discovers homo-eroticism, and its tinged with Catholic guilt. Enjoying pop music gives way to a teenage love of Mahler and Wagner. Using archival footage, we take a ferry to a day on the beach. Postwar prosperity brings some positive change, but its concrete architecture is dispiriting. Contemporary colors and sights of children playing may balance out the presence of unemployment and persistent poverty. Davies narration is a mix of his own reflections and the poems and prose of others.

Plot Summary:Set in post-nuclear-holocaust England, where a handful of bizarre characters struggle on with their lives in the ruins, amongst endless heaps of ash, piles of broken crockery and brick, muddy plains, and heaps of dentures and old boots. Patriotically singing God Save Mrs. Etheyl Shroake, Long Live Mrs. Etheyl Shroake, they wander through this surrealistic landscape, forever being warned by the police to keep moving, and prone to the occasional mutation into a parrot, cupboard, or even, yes, a bed sitting room with No Wogs scrawled in the grime on its windows. In particular, this story revolves around the odd love story of a girl who lives with her parents in one compartment of a London Underground train, the commuter in the next compartment, and the doctor they meet after returning above ground in search of a nurse for the heavily pregnant girl.

Plot Summary:The Long Day Closes is the story of eleven-year-old Bud. A sad and lonely boy, Bud struggles through his days. With cinema as his main source of solace, he haunts the local movie-house. All the while, his family looms large in our peripheral vision as do the menacing bullies of his school, but Bud is the center of attention both from the cameras angle and from his doting family. With a gray background, the film fuses clips and audio from classic movies into Buds dreary childhood and brings it to life with an elegance Bach would bring to your home movies. The overall effect is a montage of memory which seems to ignite flashes of recognition in the viewer.

Actors: Dorothy Ray Healey , Joseph McCarthy , Joseph Stalin

Director: Jim Klein Julia Reichert

IMDB Rate: 6.1 out of 10 (33 votes)

Plot Summary:Julia and Jim have done a great historical and artistic service towards helping round out the larger story of the American political heart. This is so important for all generations to witness and learn from. The sordid fear-mongering that passes for saving America from all sorts of changes that threaten those in false and temporary power is indeed the shadow side of our history. This film cuts through that fog to show an important aspect of our grassroots seeking for justice, better ways of self government, working to learn from history and from those who thought and think deeply outside the lines, and does so in a very human way. So that both the ignorant and the educated, those who lived the times and those who came later, can integrate with perspective a very scary time and understand more about the tendency to follow the crowd. A fine film to show in history, government, etc. classes, starting in early high school. Should be available in every library.
